WINNING WEEK FOR UPHILL TEAMS
Date: 2nd March 2008WINNING WEEK FOR UPHILL TEAMS
This week saw Uphills 'B', 'D' and 'E' teams in action, winning all three matches.
The 'B' team were at home to Frys 'B' and won by 5 rubbers to 4. Unfortunately the Frys team arrived with only two ladies, so had to concede the third mixed and the last two ladies. Despite this they produced a good performance and made the Uphill team of Ruth Harding, Steve Matthew, Julie Storer, Wei Cheung, Teresa Davison and Brian Hadley (Capt.) work hard for their win. The match started with Ruth & Steve losing the first mixed 18-21, 21-17, 15-21, and this was followed by Julie & Wei losing the second mixed. The only ladies to be played proved to be a tough three game set, which Ruth & Julie lost 21-18, 13-21, 16-21. At this point due to the conceded games the match score stood at three rubbers each. The first mens proved to be the deciding rubber, with Steve & Wei winning 13-21, 21-18, 21-15. Steve & Brian then won the second mens easily 21-9, 21-9, before Frys came back to win the last mens 16-21, 19-21.
The three bottom teams in this division are Clevedon Feathers 'B' who have 34 points from 9 matches, Frys 'B' who have 33 points from 9 matches and Uphill who have 32 points from 8 matches. Two of these will go down, so the last two matches for Uphill will prove decisive.
Uphill 'D' team, consisting of Claire Garrett, Matthew Valentine, Fiona Singleton, Chris Ponting, Sue Garrett and Dave Barnes were at home to Chew Valley 'B' and won by 5 rubbers to 4. This was a match where three of the rubbers went to three games, all of which Uphill won. Chew Valley started well by winning the first two mixed. Then the experienced Sue Garrett, playing with Dave Barnes, won the third mixed 8-21, 23-21, 21-16. Uphill then dominated the ladies rubbers winning all three, although Sue & Fiona had a close and tough rubber against Brenda Martin & Tina Toogood before winning 21-13, 21-23, 26-24. Chew Valley then won the first two mens rubbers relatively easily, before Chris & Dave won the last mens 21-15, 16-21, 21-16, to win the match for Uphill. Both Sue Garrett and Dave Barnes won all their rubbers.
The 'E' team were away to Tickenham and won by six rubbers to three. The team was a mixture of experienced ladies with junior boys namely, Helen Woodfin, Matthew Potts, Caroline Poole, Tom Higgins, Lynn Pope and Lewis Coles. Uphill lost a close first mixed 23-21, 21-15, but Caroline & Tom, who have so far won all their mixed this season, won the second mixed easily 4-21, 10-21. This was followed by Lynn & Lewis winning comfortably 15-21, 10-21. All three ladies rubbers were very close and went to three games.
Helen & Caroline won 9-21, 23-21, 17-21, Helen & Lynn lost 21-13, 21-23, 21-18 and Caroline & Lynn lost 21-17, 17-21, 23-21. The boys won the three mens rubbers for Uphill to win the match. Tom Higgins and Lewis Coles won all their rubbers.
