Date: 13th January 2008

UPHILL 'A' BACK IN WINNING HABIT

The 'A' team continued their excellent start to 2008 when they got their revenge on Clevedon Feathers in the return home match, beating them by 7 rubbers to 2 and consolidating their position at the top of the league, despite having Captain Nicky Mills unable to play. She did however rally her team well from the sidelines. The team consisted of Sue Blackmore, Mark Edwards, Jenny Cross, Paul Edwards, Becky Halfpenny and Steve Mathew. The first mixed was hard fought and was the only rubber to go to three games. Mark Edwards & Sue Blackmore for Uphill, were playing Mike Brett & 16yr old Emily Hollis, who is high in the England under 17 ratings. Mark & Sue won the first game 21-14 but Mike & Emily came back strongly in the next game to win 18-21. The deciding game was again very close with some excellent rallies before Mark & Sue won 21-19. This set the pattern for the evening with the rest of the games being won relatively easily by the Uphill players, with the exception of the first two ladies in which Emily Hollis was in control and won them for Clevedon Feathers with the support of Viv Edwards and Trudi Bird.

This maintains Uphills position at the top of the League Table having played 6, won 5, and got 39 rubbers and 49 points. Clevedon Feathers 'A' are now second having played 5, won 4, and got 30 rubbers and 38 points. So all is now set for a close contest over the last few matches.

Uphill mens team played Wells at home and lost by 4 rubbers to 2. The Uphill team was Matthew Potts, Nigel Judge, David Banes and (Capt.) Bill Ponting. Both teams really enjoyed the match, which was competitive and played in a very sporting spirit. The highlight rubber of the evening was between Bill Ponting & David Banes (Uphill) and Howard Burnett (Snr.) & Richard Hole. Howard & Richard won the first game 21-18, then in the second game Bill & David were 6-18 down only to win the next 15 points straight through and the game 21-18. The final game was nip and tuc with Bill & David winning 21-18 and the rubber.
