UPHILL PLAYERS PERFORM WELL ON THE COURTS AND IN THE TOUGH TEN RUN

Date: 14th February 2010

Uphill Badminton Club teams have had some extreme results with the 'A' and 'C' teams winning, the 'B' team winning and losing and the 'D' and mens teams losing. A group of ten players representing all the club teams also took part in the Tough Ten Run and raised a significant sum of money for the sports relief charity. This was a new Club venture organised by Club Captain Mark Edwards, who made sure that all the members got round by following them in. The star performance came from Grant Kelly who was the first Uphill member in with a time of one hour thirteen minutes with Billy Fear coming in close behind him. This was an excellent group performance with all of them running under one hour thirty six minutes. The photo below shows the runners. The 'B' team were away to top of Division 2, Nailsea & Yatton 'A' and lost a very close competitive match by 5 rubbers to 4. The team of Teresa Davison, Wai Cheung, Christy Langford, Brian Hadley, Denise Burton (Capt.) & Rob Morray made a poor start with Cathy Alexander & Richard Irving beating Teresa Davison & Wai Cheung 21-10, 21-10 but Uphill came straight back with Christy Langford & Brian Hadley beating Terry O'Shea & Mike Chapman 21-16, 21-16. Nailsea & Yatton then won the third mixed 22-20, 21-19. Again Uphill hit back with Christy & Teresa taking the first ladies 18-21, 21-16, 16-21. Nailsea & Yatton won the next ladies 21-19, 21-12 to edge in front but Christy & Denise won the third ladies 21-19, 20-22, 21-18 to bring the match back level. The mens rubbers were all very close with two of them going to three games. In the first Wai & Brian started well by winning the first game 21-9 but somehow lost the next two 17-21, 16-21. In the second Wai & Rob lost 12-21, 19-21. The last mens rubber saw Brian & Rob recover from losing the first game 9-21 to win the next two 21-17, 25-23. To end a good nights badminton that could have gone either way. The only Nailsea & Yatton player to win all his rubbers was Richard Irving while Christy Langford won all her rubbers for the third successive match. In the next match the 'B' team were able to field the same players this time away to Mark 'A' and won comfortably by 9 rubbers to 0 in straight games. The photo shows the winning 'B' team L to R standing: - Denise, Christy and Teresa Knealing: - Rob, Brian and Wai The 'D' team were away to Pill 'B' and lost a very close match by 6 rubbers to three. The team of Fiona Singleton, Robin Curry, Kate Robinson, Grant Kelly, Sue Garrett (Capt.) and Peter Rybaruk all played well, despite finding the court surfaces slippery causing some players to fall on several occasions. This was a good competitive match that could have gone either way as four rubbers went to three games, with Pill winning three of them, and many other games were close. For Uphill Fiona & Robin won the first mixed, Sue & Pete won the third mixed and Robin & Pete won the second mens. The only players to win all their rubbers were Linda Paisley and Mark Lord from Pill. The mens team were at home to Mendipway and lost by 6 rubbers to 0. The team of Steve Robinson, Fred Brown, Steve Emerson and Captain Bill Ponting were out played by a stronger side and lost all the rubbers in straight games.
