UPHILL 'A' HAND OUT ANOTHER WHITEWASH
Date: 7th February 2010Uphill Badminton Club had another week of good results as the 'A' and 'C' teams won and the 'B' team lost a very close away match. The 'A' team who earlier in the season beat Wyvern 'A' 8-1 this time beat a weakened Wyvern 'A' by 9 rubbers to 0 and in so doing handed out their fourth whitewash to opposing teams this season. This was a very one-sided match with all the rubbers being won in straight games. The team of Becky Matthews, Paul Edwards, Nicky Mills (Capt,), Mark Edwards, Becky Halfpenny and Matt Cole all kept their concentration and played well. So far this season Paul and Mark Edwards have won all their rubbers, seven mixed with good support from Becky Matthews and Capt. Nicky Mills and fourteen mens with good support from Matt Cole who has also won all his mens rubbers. The 'B' team were away to top of Division 2, Nailsea & Yatton 'A' and lost a very close competitive match by 5 rubbers to 4. The team of Teresa Davison, Wai Cheung, Christy Langford, Brian Hadley, Denise Burton (Capt.) & Rob Morray made a poor start with Cathy Alexander & Richard Irving beating Teresa Davison & Wai Cheung 21-10, 21-10 but Uphill came straight back with Christy Langford & Brian Hadley beating Terry O'Shea & Mike Chapman 21-16, 21-16. Nailsea & Yatton then won the third mixed 22-20, 21-19. Again Uphill hit back with Christy & Teresa taking the first ladies 18-21, 21-16, 16-21. Nailsea & Yatton won the next ladies 21-19, 21-12 to edge in front but Christy & Denise won the third ladies 21-19, 20-22, 21-18 to bring the match back level. The mens rubbers were all very close with two of them going to three games. In the first Wai & Brian started well by winning the first game 21-9 but somehow lost the next two 17-21, 16-21. In the second Wai & Rob lost 12-21, 19-21. The last mens rubber saw Brian & Rob recover from losing the first game 9-21 to win the next two 21-17, 25-23. To end a good nights badminton that could have gone either way. The only Nailsea & Yatton player to win all his rubbers was Richard Irving while Christy Langford won all her rubbers for the third successive match. The 'C' team were at home to Wyvern 'C' and won by 6 rubbers to 3. This was a close and competitive match with five rubbers going to three games and many other individual games having close score lines. The team of Ruth Harding, Rob Cole, Julie O'Sullivan, Tom Higgins, Maureen Matthews (Capt,) and Robin Curry, playing his first 'C' team match, all played well. Uphill had a poor start losing the first two very close mixed rubbers. Ruth & Rob losing 23-25, 21-13, 18-21 to Elaine Waldren & Glyn Davis and Julie & Tom losing 21-17, 19-21, 22-24 to Eve Lockwood & Ali Ershad. Captain Maureen Matthews & Robin Curry then won the third mixed 21-19, 21-11. Ruth & Julie won the first ladies rubber 21-12, 21-18 and Ruth & Maureen then won a hard fought second ladies 21-15, 19-21, 21-16. Wyvern then took the third ladies 21-12, 20-22, 21-16. Uphill won all the mens rubbers. The first comfortably 21-12, 21-14. The first game of the second mens was close before Rob & Robin won 22-20, 21-11. The final rubber of the evening was a very up & down affair before Tom & Robin won 21-13, 11-21, 21-18 to end a very good evenings badminton. The only person to win all their rubbers was Robin Curry with good support from Maureen, Rob and Tom.
