  • Uphill Badminton Club was the brainchild of Ben Allison, an ex Earl of Scotland player, at the time residing in Moseley Grove, Uphill. Together with Jim Brown, the then Treasurer of the Victory Hall, the Village Hall Committee was approached and permission obtained to adjust the lights and paint in the lines for the badminton court. Uphill Badminton Club was born in February 1978. In the beginning the club consisted of 16 members, all being residents of Uphill or Bleadon (small villages outside Weston-super-Mare).

The first tournament was played in May 1978. The trophy for the occasion was presented to the badminton club by Reg Day, and was thereafter known as the 'Slimeridge Trophy'. In September 1978 the first club committee was elected and the membership rose to 25. It was decided to enter a team in the North Somerset Badminton league. The bottom division was the 9th, and the 'A' team subsequently won and was promoted every year until reaching the 3rd division.

In 1985 the Weston-super-Mare Cricket Club had two national standard badminton courts built, and a motion was made to move the club to the new venue. Around 20% of the members voted to stay at the Victory Hall. Uphill Badminton Club officially moved its venue to the Cricket Club and those remaining became known as Uphill Village Badminton Club Since moving Uphill Badminton Club has gone from strength to strength and in 1999, after a AGM meeting in August of that year, saw another move to acquire more court time for its growing membership. This move took it to Wyvern Sports Centre where it has four courts on three nights every week (two for club nights, Tuesdays & Thursdays, and one for matches on Saturdays). Uphill Badminton Club now runs six teams in the North Somerset League and one men's team in Division 1 of the Bristol Men's League.

A team is also enterred into the George Rowden Cup competition, which we were winners of in 2003.
